Announcing: Editorial Director Kari Cwynar

Curator, critic and editor Kari Cwynar is undertaking a new role at C Magazine, Canada’s much respected contemporary art criticism quarterly.

C Magazine and the board of its publisher C The Visual Art Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Kari Cwynar as our inaugural Editorial Director in residence. The newly defined role is a rotating part-time position to be filled through an international call every two to three years.

During her tenure as Editorial Director, Cwynar will establish a dynamic new model for content development that fulfils C Magazine’s mandate to provide a vital forum for the exploration of significant ideas in contemporary visual art and culture. Cwynar brings her unique curatorial perspective and experience to the role of shaping the magazine’s editorial vision and building its capacity, researching and sourcing contributions from a broad range of national and international writers and artists.

Cwynar’s role as Editorial Director is complemented by C Magazine’s permanent team of Executive Director and Publisher Kate Monro and a Managing Editor, ensuring an influx of diverse new voices and consistency in the delivery and management of content and educational programs. The posting for the position of Managing Editor follows below.

Kari Cwynar is a curator, critic and editor based in Toronto. She is currently Curator at Evergreen Brick Works, where she is developing a program of temporary, site-specific public art projects along the Lower Don River. She was co-Director of the occasional project space and publishing house Kunstverein Toronto 2014-2017.

Cwynar studied Art History at Queen’s University and Carleton University, earning her MA in 2010, and later participated in the de Appel Curatorial Programme in Amsterdam. Cwynar has held curatorial research positions at The Banff Centre, the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario. She has curated exhibitions internationally, at de Appel Arts Centre, Amsterdam; apexart, New York; EFA Project Space, New York; Cooper Cole, Toronto; and The Banff Park Museum, Banff, among others, and has participated in curatorial residencies at Fogo Island Arts, the Banff Centre and SOMA Mexico. Cwynar also writes on contemporary art for publications including Artforum, Frieze, C Magazine and Inuit Art Quarterly.

Kari Cwynar succeeded Amish Morrell as Editor in 2016 and held the position of Assistant Editor at C Magazine 2015-2016.
