Since the 1980’s it has become common practice to include contemporary work in survey exhibitions of historical Indigenous art, thought the inclusion of these contemporary works through often awkward and ungainly installation practices begs the consideration: should this practice be reconsidered? Hill examines curatorial strategies in two exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and suggests that thematic surveys are no longer a sufficient or compelling approach to the exhibition of Indigenous art.
