Artist Project

Alex Jacobs-Blum (she/her) is a Gayogohó̱ :nǫʼ (Cayuga) of Six Nations of the Grand River Territory and German visual artist and independent curator living in Hamilton, ON. Her research focuses on Indigenous futurities and accessing embodied Ancestral Hodinöhsö:ni' knowledge.

In _C Magazine_’s 40th year of publication, the writing and visual projects in this issue form an almanac in themselves, out of the impulse to make meaning out of the present state of contemporary art and liberatory organizing. As contributors find grounding in celestial time, ancestors, the stakes of censorship, the choreography of movement building, AI incantations, and more, we express almanacs as projects of persistence between past, present, and future—and even of spell-casting.

Guest curated by Alex Jacobs-Blum, this artist project by Alexis Nanibush-Pamajewong embodies the ancestral Anishinaabeg art form of mazinibaganjigan (birch bark biting) in their performance documented along the shores of Lake Ontario.

Alexis Nanibush-Pamajewong (she/they) is a Two-Spirit Anishinaabe interdisciplinary artist from Shawanaga First Nation (Robinson Huron Treaty). Their mediums include performance, installation, beadwork, photography, and video. Alexis’s work focuses on Anishinaabe storytelling, ancestral/intergenerational knowledge, presence/absence, land as pedagogy, acts of care, love, and labour.
