This article is a transcription of a conversation between Audain Curator Amy Kazymerchyk and L.A. –based artist Martine Syms. The two discuss Syms work, “Borrowed Lady”, which was on show at Vancouver’s Audian Gallery from October 13 to December 10. Kazymerchyk and Syms discuss the creation and implications of “Borrowed Lady”, which is an expanded version of her earlier video work, “Notes on Gesture”. Syms’ oeuvre, the theoretical underpinnings and curatorial aims of “Borrowed Woman” are also discussed as well as their contemporary gestural counterparts – memes, GIFs and emojis.
