Review

Angel Callander is a writer, editor, and curator in Toronto. She is currently a PhD candidate in Art History and Visual Culture at York University. Her work can be found in publications such as _CBC Arts, Canadian Art, BlackFlash,_ and _esse arts + opinions_, among others, as well as in _Imagining Futures of Experimental Media_ (Pleasure Dome, NIMAC & OddSite Arts, 2023) and _Architecture and the Smart City_ (Routledge, 2020).


This issue of C Magazine looks through the mirror as a bleeding surface—a metaphor for acts of seeing, thinking, and creating that return your gaze. We recognize that the way we look in a mirror is also the way we tell a story, as a reflection of value systems and the stakes of lucidity and distortion, especially under colonial systems that would twist their subjects’ humanity. Many texts here, between artists and writers, take the form of dialogues, and think through persistent possibilities of visual revelation, language, and mourning. Formal and symbolic fractures are reflected through chimerical imagery, Hong Kong cinemas of resistance, Puerto-Rican space-time, physical and spiritual intertwining, and a real place to land for both joy and grief—the end of a rainbow, or its burning.

By now we understand extraction as the political-ontological basis for the circulation of resources under neoliberal capitalism—and that agents of such appropriation scarcely do enough to respect, heal, and replenish their sources. From sex work and old-growth forests to ghost towns and lost languages, this issue explores artistic and activist practices that interrogate an array of extractive efforts and attempt to demarcate non-extractive modalities.
