In concise, potent, and often personal fragments, April Thompson examines how Roxanne Charles, Kali Spitzer, and Tania Willard approach photography in ways that work toward a decolonial decoupling of death from the medium. What does it mean to stop treating photographs as rote memory-keepers that exempt us from doing the remembering with our bodies, our senses, our non-linear networks of feeling?

Reviewing the group exhibition “The Neighbour’s Plate” at Unit 17 (28 November 2020 to 17 January 2021), April Thompson writes that the installation’s central kitchen table closes “the gap of being alone in the gallery, of being ‘socially distanced’ in public places.”

April Thompson reviews David Wojnarowicz: Photography & Film 1978–1992 (2020) at Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, Vancouver. The comprehensive exhibition was the first to focus solely on the artist’s photographic and filmic practice, and featured more than 100 works intersecting sexuality, intimacy, transmission, illness, and mortality.
