Candice Hopkins

Candice Hopkins is a Canadian writer and curator from Whitehorse, Yukon. She lives and works in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She has held positions at The IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, The Banff Centre’s Walter Phillips Gallery, Western Front in Vancouver and the National Gallery of Canada. At present, she is Curatorial Advisor for documenta 14, which opens in Athens, Greece and Kassel, Germany in 2017.

Between the Monument and the Ruin

An interview with the Afghani artist Lida Abdul is presented. Lida Abdul was an artist in residence at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada and was the first artist to represent Afghanistan at the 51st Venice Biennale. The interview discusses working as an artist in Afghanistan, art and politics, as well as Abdul’s practice and its relationship to architecture, performativity, memory, monuments and ruins. Works discusses include White House (2005), What We Saw Upon Waking (2006), and Clapping with Stones (2005).
