Elwood Jimmy

Currently based in Toronto, Elwood Jimmy is originally from the Thunderchild First Nation, a Nêhiyaw community in the global far north. He is a learner, writer, artist, facilitator and collaborator. For 20 years, he has played a leadership role in several art projects, collectives and organizations locally and abroad.

Elwood Jimmy reflects on Rebecca Belmore’s vandalized installation Freeze: Stonechild Memorial (2019) to understand how Canada’s colonial narrative could be disrupted. The death and memorialization of Neil Stonechild become discussion points for exploring ways artworks, artists, and institutions address trauma in a colonial narrative that continually undervalues Indigenous experiences.
