Joana Joachim

Joana Joachim is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Art History and at the Institute for Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies at McGill University. Her current SSHRC-funded work examines the visual culture of Black women’s hair and dress in 17th- and 18th-century prints and paintings, with a focus on forms of resistance and ongoing discrimination through hair politics.

Curating, Criticism and Care, or, “Showing Up” as Praxis

Speaking from their experience at the Black Curators Forum that occurred in October 2019 at The Power Plant Gallery, Toronto, Joana Joachim stresses the need for Black professionals to hold permanent institutional positions as art historians, curators and critics in order to implement Black Canadian art in a broader, more equitable historical and contemporary context.
