An interview with photographer and writer Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa, discussing methods and politics of documentative photographic practice and its link to Wolukau-Wanambwa’s practice in written criticism, as well as the publication of his debut photobook.

While contemplating a postcard of Delacroix’s Young Orphan Girl in the Cemetery posted on her fridge, Ives explores the ability of paintings to create a “viewer” whose interpretation of the work is contrary to the more obvious literal meaning of a title. The “viewer” is created through affect – the expression, the feeling, and the poetry of the painting itself. Ives strives for herself, as a writer, to similarly create a “reader.”
