In this historical overview, Vesna Krstich examines the progressive education movement of the 1960s. Noting work by artists, sociologists and educators including Allan Kaprow, Robert Filliou, George Maciunas, Maurice R. Stein, Roy Ascott, and more, Krstich presents a comprehensive timeline of how the concept of play entered the classroom, attempting to transform authoritative institutions into a performative laboratories.

This article reviews the exhibition Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College 1933-1957, presented at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles from Feb. 21 to May 15, 2016.

The article reflects on the historical performance piece “Hans Hofmann and His Students,” which took place at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City from 1963-1965. Particular focus is given to how this performance art tradition was carried out by the Polish artist Grzegorz Kowalski and his students. The educational experiment called “Project Other Ways” is also discussed.
