Please join us for the launch of both C Magazine issue 126 Predecessors and REARVIEWS no.3.

REARVIEWS Readings at 6:30 by Danielle St-Amour and Xenia Benivolski. The exhibition opening for 2nd Skin follows from 7 to 11 pm.

C Magazine issue 126 “Predecessors”

Issue 126, on art world and countercultural predecessors, includes writing by Zoe Todd, about Indigenous law in the work of legal scholar Val Napoleon and filmmaker Loretta Todd; Maiko Tanaka on feminist citation; Liz Park on neglected histories in the video installations of Cornelia Wyngaarden; and in a special section, Corrine Fitzpatrick, Vera Frenkel, Jacob Korczysnki, Chris Kraus and others write about teachers, friends, mentors and Weird Elders who have influenced their lives and work. Jesse McKee also looks at countercultural positioning in the video and sound art of Adrian Piper, Newsreel Collective and Up Against the Wall Motherfucker.

For the artist project, Danielle St-Amour and Xenia Benivolski parasitize C Magazine by producing the third edition of their publication REARVIEWS within the margins of the reviews section. Onyeka Igwe, Amy Lam, Tiziana La Melia, Raymond Boisjoly, Oliver Husain and Mohammad Salemy enact a sequence of responses based on one of the regular exhibition reviews.

The reviews section includes Myfanwy MacLeod: Tell Her Nothing She Tells All at Catriona Jeffries in Vancouver; Max Becher and Andrea Robbins: Following the Ten Commandments at University of Manitoba School of Art Gallery in Winnipeg; Possible Futures at the Art Gallery of Windsor; Temperamental at the Doris McCarthy Gallery in Toronto; Krista Buecking: Matters of Fact at Susan Hobbs in Toronto; Krista Belle Stewart: Seraphine, Seraphine at Mercer Union, Toronto; Eleanor King: Dark Utopian at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax; Eileen Quinlan: After Hours at Campoli Presti in Paris; and Performatorium: Festival of Queer Performance at Queer City Cinema, Regina, also the basis of the Rearviews artist project. Also included is a book review of Paul Chan’s New Lovers erotica series, published by Badlands Unlimited.

Regular sections include On Writing: Aerobic Justice by Helen Reed, Inventory by VSVSVS and Artefact: The World Will Always Welcome Lovers by Benny Nemerofsky Ramsay.

REARVIEWS no. 3

REARVIEWS is a publication project co-organized by Xenia Benivolski and Danielle St-Amour. REARVIEWS reviews exhibition reviews, inviting repeated and critical address of the review format from a variety of contributors. REARVIEWS no. 3 is published within the reviews section of C Magazine issue 126 Predecessors and includes writing by Onyeka Igwe, Amy Lam, Tiziana La Melia, Raymond Boisjoly, Oliver Husain and Mohammad Salemy.
