Call for Pitches for MIRROR MIRROR
C159—Winter 2025
Accepted until: July 8, 2024

For this issue, we return to fundamentals by asking: how does contemporary art act as a mirror? In paradigm-shifting moments like the one we currently find ourselves in, art (its creation and reception) reflects the values of a person, a culture, or even the “imagined community” of a nation. In the mirror, we also find the possibility for misrecognition, like the colonial gaze that twists the reflection of its subjects’ humanity. From one subject to another, we ask: what do you mirror? And what do you see?

Mirrors can distort, confront, and offer revelation. Mirrors might imply a frame (or a lack thereof): consider what is inside or outside of a given frame of reference, or where there is no longer a solid boundary between an image and its edges. We also mirror each other in our intimacies. The repetition in the theme, MIRROR MIRROR, might further suggest an echo that gathers strength, like the multiple voices of a protest chant.

Taking artistic and writing practices as reflections and refractions of how we place ourselves in relation to each other and the world, we invite pitches on (but not limited to): close collaborations, influences, gazes, subversions of image-making, colonial narcissism, and ambivalent projections—including across photographic, filmic, and social mediums.

Thematic feature, artist project, and column pitches accepted until July 8, 2024. Review pitches, not required to be on theme, are accepted on a rolling basis.

Send pitches to pitch@cmagazine.com, with a subject line that starts with the word PITCH and indicates the submission type (review, essay, interview, One Thing, for example).

Please include ~150 words about your subject and how you’ll approach it, including hyperlinks wherever relevant. An estimated word count is appreciated. If you have not written for us recently, include a link to your website—or a copy of CV—and one or two writing samples (ideally ones in a style similar to your pitched piece). We do not publish reprints or previously written pieces. Please see our writer’s guidelines for more information.

Thank you for understanding that due to capacity, we are unable to reply to all pitches.

Note about conflicts of interest: we do not accept pitches from platforms regarding their own programming.
