$25.05 / hour for 12.5 hours per week

In partnership with the Career Launchers Program at OCAD U's RBC Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers, C Magazine is hiring an Editorial & Programs Assistant. The Editorial and Programs Assistant will join our team to support crucial activities, including editorial assistance for print and online platforms, public programming and partnerships, and related communications. This is a fantastic opportunity for OCAD U students and recent graduates interested in building work experience in a small arts non-profit and learning about how a contemporary art magazine runs. The successful applicant will also gain an understanding of programs that present art and ideas and activate writing in considered, flexible, and playful ways.

Role and Responsibilities

Editorial (Approx. 60%)
  • Working closely with Editors to support multiple aspects of producing approx. two print issues, biweekly online reviews, and monthly online features
  • Contributing to print issue theme ideas, researching writers/artists/topics
  • Researching and obtaining images and reproduction rights for print magazine; writing and formatting captions according to the C Magazine Living Style Guide; participating in image selection process
  • Drafting abstracts for print issue content
  • Liaising with contributors to collect contracts and mailing addresses
  • Preparing PDFs of individual articles and distributing to authors
  • Possible other research, editorial, and admin tasks as they arise
Programming (Approx. 30%)
  • Working closely with C Mag team to contribute to programming planning, including developing or implementing ideas, coordinating artist contracts and communication, and potential in-person event logistics
  • Providing technical support for online programs (over Zoom webinar)
Communications (Approx. 10%)
  • Writing and editing promotional materials, such as event descriptions, for specific programs; gathering promo images; and liaising with program artists
  • Proofreading articles that are uploaded to website and other copy as needed
  • Assisting with targeted promotions or community outreach as needed

Qualifications

  • Current OCAD U students in any discipline in their final year at the Undergraduate level, or any year at the Master’s level, and recent OCADU grads (2023) at the Undergraduate level or Master’s level
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; attention to detail, excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask and manage long and short-term projects according to print and program schedules
  • Demonstrated experience with arts administration and logistics coordination are considered a major asset
  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills related to contemporary art and culture is a major asset
  • Awareness of or passion for contemporary art and related issues, ideas, communities and current happenings, is an asset
  • Experience with arts publishing is an asset (magazine-related, journalistic, independent, zines, and/or peer-to-peer publishing/writing experience is welcomed)
  • Working knowledge of Mac OS, Microsoft Word and Excel, Slack, Google Apps, and Dropbox is beneficial
  • Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received a Career Launcher opportunity
