Artist-run centres

Two modernist exhibitions celebrate the Millenium. Tate Modern’s Century City: Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis spans the 20th-century. City Racing at the Institute of Contemporary Art consists of work by artists who showed at the now closed artist-run centre. Reviewer Lee Rodney feels that both exhibitions disappointed.

Performance artist Charmaine Wheatley displays videotapes, drawings and other objects at Winnipeg’s Gallery One One One. Accompanied by Cliff Eyland and others, she also visits two strip clubs with the intent to perform. In an e-mail to the author, Charmaine discusses feminism but does not deliberately think of it in relation to her work.

Philip Monk curates the exhibition “Substitute City” at the Power Plant in Toronto. Art by local artists was chosen to express their relationship with their city. Almost all his choices were by photographers, video artists and filmmakers, such as Vid Ingelevic and John McLachlin; the exception is work by cartoonist Seth.

Jordan Crandall’s film “Heatseeking” is part of the exhibition Bitstreams at The Whitney in NYC. Writer David Womack analyses Crandall’s use and exploration of various digital technologies. Recognizing the implications of these technologies, Crandall weaves images together, forming a relationship between subjects and the technologies they may be unaware of.
